Art History: Kandinsky, with Jeanette Nelson

Saturday, July 18, 12:30 to 3:30 pm

I will show a PowerPoint presentation on Wassily Kandinsky, one of the primary pioneers of western abstract art, decidedly moving away from objective representation. He is credited with painting the first totally abstract pictures that were pure designs, and he believed that color and form had meaning all on their own. As a musician as well as a painter, Kandinsky thought of color as music. We will be painting to classical music pieces, listening to the music for 5 to 10 minutes without doing anything else, with our eyes closed. Then we’re going to try to imagine what colors, line, and shapes can be used to show the feelings that the music creates. While listening to the music again and painting a picture of the sound, you will use line, shapes, and colors without trying to draw any particular object. Instead, you will produce an abstract design that is made up on the spot as an improvisation, created without planning or sketching ahead of time. Then I will change the music selection and you will paint again, observing the different results to different kinds of music.

Bleeding Tissue Paper with Elizabeth Lincourt

Saturday, August 8, 12:30 to 3:30 pm

Bleeding tissue paper is a type of tissue paper specifically designed to release its color when wet. This "bleeding" effect is desirable in various art and craft projects because it creates a watercolor-like effect without the need for paints.

There are several methods for using Bleeding tissue paper, and I will demonstrate all of them.

1. Wet the paper, lay pieces of tissue paper down, and let the colors bleed onto the watercolor paper

2. place the tissue scraps on dry paper and wet them either with a sponge or a spray bottle

3. place the tissue scraps on wet paper and add additional water to create the desired effect.

The creations need to dry. Then watercolor paint, watercolor pencils, and/or ink can be applied to create a scene.
