MIXED MEDIA

Steven Naimoli

Steven says, “In 1972, I bought a trunk of unfinished needlepoint canvases and a dozen elegant finished needlepoints from an estate sale. In the 80s, I met Blanchard Barlett Walker. We would get together weekly and work on needlepoints. I was self-taught, but Blanchard game me a lot of tips. Tom Truslow, a 1929 Hobart alum, saw some of my work and asked me if I would do his coat of arms. I made the pattern from a photograph. It took two years, part time, under a magnifying glass.”

SCULPTURE

John Lechner

“SEA MIST NO. 3”

John says, “I have been working in clay since the early 1980s. This piece is the result of a technique I developed some years ago. The piece starts as a porcelain bowl thrown on the potter's wheel. Then, while the clay is still stuck to the bat, I flip it upside down and using my wet fingers I pull and stretch the clay into organic forms. When the clay is dried to what is called leather hard, it is removed from the bat and trimmed. I glaze the work using a spary gun and an air brush.”
